While many studies have proven the prevalent connection between sex trafficking and our foster care system, we continue to miss the core of the problem in our country—children’s untreated early trauma histories. According to CBS4 Denver, “Sixty percent of children rescued from sex trafficking have at one time have been in the custody of a welfare agency or foster home, according to lawmakers.” While lawmakers have recognized this unfortunate connection, nothing has changed.
You can help.
“No matter how many sexual predators are prosecuted, they will continue to prey upon children living within the broken foster care system,” said Forrest Lien, Executive Director at the Institute for Attachment and Child Development. “These children need proper treatment for their early trauma histories and our foster care system needs a major overhaul. When we ignore the roots of sex trafficking as a society, we’re only perpetuating it.”
To help promote awareness and advocacy for this topic, we’re sharing a press release with local and national media, and with you, about the connection between reactive attachment disorder, the foster care system, and sex trafficking. Please read and share with friends, family, and your local media stations. This is our problem America. It’s time to do something to protect our most vulnerable children.
